It’s best to have a checklist to be sure that everything is planned and ready to go come migration day. Below is a brief list of tasks/considerations to keep in mind when planning a migration. Although this list is far from complete, it does give you a high level overview of some of the most basic tasks involved with planning a migration.
Website Migration :
☐ Do you have administrative access to the server?
☐ Ftp access or some type of access to your website files?
☐ Do you know what the type of database server that your website is using?
☐ Do you have remote access to your database server?
☐ If not can you obtain recent backups of your database?
☐ What technologies your websites are using (php, asp.net, asp, just html) and what ver-sions?
☐ Do you know what type of webserver your websites are running on?
☐ what version and are they using any special modules or third party tools?
☐ Is your site secured with ssl (https), if so can you generate new certificates?
☐ You can purchase a new SSL certificates?
☐ Do you have access to change your DNS entries to point your sites to the new servers?
☐ Do you have email associated with your websites that need to be migrated?
☐ Do any of your websites use additional methods to help it function, i.e. cron jobs, scheduled
jobs or any other type of automation or services?
